Introduction
To begin, mermaids are not the beautiful creatures we think they are. To be honest, a lot of people would think that a mermaid was the ugliest thing in the whole world. Not me... They may not be gorgeous, but they have a beauty like everything else in this world. The stories have been passed down many generations and have become legends. There are so many things that we people think that aren't true about them, like they cannot shoot webs from their hands like they do in Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides. Or like they don't speak any human language as they do in The Little Mermaid. They don't turn human when they dry, their nails don't change color according to their mood like in Aquamarine, and basically what I'm saying is: People have changed the legends to entertain the world. They are said to drown men, eat them, seduce them and so many other things that are false, really... Mermaids keep under water with their pods. They don't interact with humans much, otherwise they would be in zoos just like monkeys.
LEGENDS
SYRIA:One of the earliest known legends come from Syria, in ancient Syrian, there was a goddess who was a fertility goddess whose cult eventually spread to Rome and Greece. It was associated with water and fish. Legend has it that she jumped into a lake and her bottom half grew a tail while her legs still stuck out.
BABYLONIA:Before the mermaid was told, the merman was a good several thousand years ahead. A Babylonian god, had a both a fish half and a human half. However his fish half was on the top and his human half was on the bottom, but he lived among the humans and the sea.
AQUAMARINE: Aquamarine is the gemstone that belongs to the sea, the oceans heart. Mermaids are said to cherish this gemstone, and are also said to create them. You see, it's said that mermaids, only mermaid and not a merman, create these beautiful rocks with their tears. When a mermaid's tear leaves their face, it is supposed to transform into an aquamarine.
STARBUCKS: At a time in the past, the logo of Starbucks was a two-tailed mermaid who was technically called Melusine, or Siren. They did however, as most of you know, change that logo to where only the head, half the chest, and the tips of the tails are visible.
SCANDINAVIA: Scandinavian mermaids called Havfines were said to be able to live in freshwater or saltwater and they could also supposedly predict the future. They were also supposed to be become ill-tempered very fast and people considered it a bad omen if ever caught in the vision of one.
